Cotton is grown mainly for the production of fibers that make up about 40% of the weight of the fruit. The rest corresponds to the seed that is used mainly in animal feed, either directly (whole cotton seed), or previous extraction of oil for human consumption (cotton flour). The extraction is usually done by means of solvents (hexane), after separating the grain from the husk and from the remains of fluff. The solvent can be applied directly or after pressure (pre-pressed procedure). The latter is what allows to obtain a higher quality product, and is the most used today. Commercial cotton flour has a crude fiber content of around 16-17%, due to the subsequent addition of husk that contains 40% crude fiber.
The main anti-nutritional factors of cotton flour are gossypol and cyclopropenoic fatty acids. The level of free gossypol is lower in the flour than in the seed.
