Zimbabwe is the only country on the African continent that has the largest deposits of stone suitable for sculpting. Zimbabwe has a long stone carving tradition dating back to the Munhumutapa Empire in the 12th century.
The primary carving stones in Zimbabwe are Springstone, Opal, Cobalt, Serpentine, Verdite, butterjade, dolomite, lapidolite, leopard rock, limestone and Soapstones.
Stones are usually classified into four groups each defined by its hardness or carvability. Soapstone is the and granite is the fourth hardest stones for carving. Within each type of carving stone there is also varying degrees of hardness. Please note that the stone you will receive is unfinished and the final sculpture will vary according to your finishing techniques.
Carving stones are available in free-form shapes only. Stones will not be cut to specific shapes and/or sizes. When completing "quantity amount", please enter approximate weight of stone required. We will confirm availabliity prior to processing your order. Pricing listed on a per pound basis.
The colors of the stone you receive with your order may vary from the colors of the sample stone used for viewing on your screen. The stone pictured is not the stone you will receive. Carving stones are products of nature. Any irregularities found within these stones are beyond our control. Although these stones are carefully selected, we reserve the right to decline any responsibility for such imperfections.
