Description
We're dairy farmers, so we know that your cows need feed of the very best in nutrition and quality to produce rich milk. Our organic cow feed is most often made from corn, roasted soy beans, oats, barley, and wheat midds. Most dairy cows are milked two to three times per day. On average, a cow will produce six to seven gallons of milk each day. A cow that is milking eats about 100 pounds each day of feed, which is a combination of hay, grain, silage and proteins (such as soybean meal), plus vitamins and minerals.
Dry forages are pasture (fresh forage) or high quality alfalfa hay, alfalfa-grass mix hay, grass hay or straw. Some dairy farmers will feed a mix of both silage and hay, while others might only feed silage or only feed hay, depending on the farm. The other half of the diet is called the concentrate. They never eat genetically modified crops and we never grow them. For most of the year, the cows graze on fresh organic pastures. During the winter they are fed on conserved grass – usually in the form of silage or hay – and other organic cereals to ensure they maintain a balanced and healthy organic diet.
A rule of thumb is that a cow will eat 2 to 2 ½ pounds of hay for each 100 pounds of body weight. Then grain makes up the remaining portion of the ration. For example, a 1,000 pound cow would need 20 to 25 pounds hay. This winter grazing program cost approximately 50 cents per day per cow, whereas the average producer feeding harvested hay per day cow cost would range from $1.25 to $2.00 per day depending on the quality of hay fed.
Organic Dairy farming means raising animals on organic feed (i.e. pastures cultivated without the use of fertilizers or pesticides), have access to pasture or outside, along with the restricted usage of antibiotics and hormones.
