Ozone in water becomes a powerful disinfectant. It is able to kill bacterium, parasites and fungi more effectively and safer than traditional chemical methods. Ozone controls water pollution and is more effective than reverse osmosis or water filters. Commercial pure water systems are mostly run with ozone being implemented in the final stage of sanitisation.

 

As a wash or spray, water treated with ozone can be used for drinking, sanitise surfaces and equipment used in food processing. Utensils and small equipment can be rinsed in ozone treated water to remove chemical and bacterial residue.

 

The magic part is the by-product of ozone is oxygen, so that no residual chemicals remain.

 

Ozone Water Treatment and Advanced Oxidation

 

Municipal Drinking Water - Ozone has been shown to be effective in a variety of drinking water applications including: disinfection, color removal, iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) reduction, hydrogen sulfide removal, taste and odor reduction micro pollutant removal and  improved filtration and flocculation of potable water.  

 

Ozone can also reduce formation of disinfection by-products such as trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids.  Ozonation is effective for removal of difficult-to-treat pathogens such asgiardia and cryptosporidium.  

 

Industrial Wastewater Treatment - Ozone and advanced oxidation processes can selectively remove pollutants from industrial wastewater and process water, e.g. TOC, COD, BOD, cyanide, phenol, color among many other compounds.  
This can include discharge to surface waters or to POTW (referred to as pretreatment). Ozone can also be used to keeps sumps clean and odor free.

 

Cooling Water Treatment - Ozone has been used extensively for treatment in cooling water towers.  It is a powerful and environmentally friendly oxidizing biocide.  

 

Rainwater Harvesting - Ozone and UV can be used to treat water produced from rainwater harvesting application.  
Combined with filtration these technologies can safely treat the rainwater for many applications such as toilet flushing and landscape irrigation.

 

Food and Beverage Applications - Ozone generators are used a variety of applications for food and beverage processing.  For example, ozone is the dominant method for the treatment of bottled water. It is also used the processing of fruits and vegetables.

 

Aquaculture - Ozone is used to treat feed water as well as improve water quality in aquaculture systems including recircualting aquaculture systems (RAS).  

 

Municipal Wastewater Treatment - Ozone has been used in two applications for municipal wastewater treatment: disinfection of wastewater effluent prior to discharge and treatment of sludge from the activated sludge process.  In the latter case the sludge treatment can reduce the amount of excess sludge and minimize the phenomenon known as bulking.  More recently, ozone is being considered for water ruse applications to recycle municipal wastewater for a variety of applications including indirect potable use.
