1. What is VPI (Vacuum Pressure Impregnation)?


Vacuum Pressure Impregnation (VPI) is a process that uses vacuum and pressure to seal porous materials with varnish or resin. The process is used primarily for high-voltage motors and generators to fill gaps in materials to create a void free insulation in various devices.


Industrial electromechanical equipment is designed for durability to provide reliable function and increased longevity, but age, temperature, and environmental factors can degrade porous metals over time. The process of impregnation seals porous materials with varnish or resin, improving the function and longevity of equipment.

4. General process of VPI

YICHENG specializes in vacuum pressure impregnation equipment manufacturing, which is more effective than traditional dip-and-bake methods and is better suited to high voltage motors and generators. Our basic vacuum pressure impregnation motor repair process comprises several steps.



  • Pre-heating:Workpieces are placed in an oven and get heating up to allow  moisture to evaporate. This helps the resin better penetrate the material.

  • Dry Vacuuming: Workpieces are removed from the oven and place it into a vacuum chamber, which removes air and any remaining moisture.

  • Filling: The impregnation chamber is filled with resin, coating the part and filling in all the gaps and pores in workpiece.

  • Wet Vacuuming: Vacuum levels are reduced and hold it for a set period of time.

  • Pressure: Increase pressure within the chamber using air compressor. This allows for even deeper penetration of the resin.

  • Draining: Vent the pressure, drain the chamber of excess resin, and remove the workpiece.

  • Curing: Finally, the equipment is placed into an oven to cure the resin.


 


5. Application of VPI


VPI systems are used by the electrical industry in the processing of coil windings, transformer components, power cables, fiberglass laminations, cores, paper products and other items.


Impregnation has been in commercial use for over 60 years and continues to be the preferred method for ensuring pressure tight components in fail safe applications.  The aerospace, automotive, food processing and oil and gas industry use vacuum impregnation to improve the quality of their base castings, conserve resources and reduce scrap.
