Heavy metal tungsten alloys are 90% to 97% pure tungsten in a matrix of nickel and copper or nickel and iron. The addition of these alloying elements improves both the ductility and machinability of these alloys over non-alloyed tungsten.

What Is Pinewood Derby?
The pinewood derby is a racing event for Cub Scouts in the Boy Scouts of America. Cub Scouts, with the help of parents, build their own cars from wood, usually from kits containing a block of pine, plastic wheels and metal axles. With the popularity of the pinewood derby, other organizations have developed similar events, and a small industry has developed to provide tracks, timers, scales and other products.

Tungsten heavy alloy cubes can be easily used for pinewood derby car weighting by drilling a series of 1/4 inch deep holes in the bottom of the car and then using a chisel or sharp knife to clean out the pocket. Since the tungsten alloy cubes are very hard, do not plan to drill out any extra weight. Instead, use an alternate method to make fine adjustments such as adding/removing tungsten beads.
