Frankincense is a resin secreted from a peculiar tree, which is all natural and wild. Oddly enough, the more arid the natural conditions, the more suitable for the growth of frankincense trees. Frankincense is harvested every year in spring and summer.
The way to harvest frankincense by hand has not changed for thousands of years. The ash bark of a mastic tree is carefully scraped away with a special knift-like tool, and tiny drops of white resin ooze from the bark.
After a few weeks, the resin solidifies into translucent particles, which workers scrape off to allow the cut to continue secreting the resin.
The main producers of frankincense are Somalia and Ethiopia. The essential oils extracted from different varieties of frankincense vary greatly in composition and smell. The most common frankincense essential oil on the market is Boswellia carteri from Somalia.
