Calcium carbonate is a valuable resource with wide use.  As an important building material, it has a long history of exploitation. In modern industry, it is the main raw material for making cement, lime and calcium carbide. It is an indispensable flux limestone in metallurgical industry. Heavy calcium carbonate, called grinding calcium carbonate, is made by directly crushing natural calcite, limestone, chalk, shells and so on by mechanical method. It is White powder, colorless and tasteless. Stable in the air. Because its sedimentation volume (1.1-1.9 mL/g) is smaller than that of light calcium carbonate produced by chemical method (2.4-2.8 mL/g), it is called heavy calcium carbonate.

Calcium carbonate has been widely used in papermaking, plastics, plastic films, chemical fibers, rubber, adhesives, sealants, daily chemicals, cosmetics, building materials, coatings, paints, inks, putty, sealing wax, putty, felt packaging, medicine and so on. Its functions include: increasing product volume, reducing costs, improving processing properties (such as adjusting viscosity, rheological properties, vulcanizing properties), improving dimensional stability, reinforcing or semi-reinforcing, improving printing properties, and improving physical properties (such as heat resistance, extinction, abrasion resistance, flame retardancy, whiteness, glossiness), etc.

Light calcium carbonate is also called precipitated calcium carbonate and its chemical formula is CaCO3. Light calcium carbonate is non-toxic, odorless, non-irritating and usually white. Because its settling volume (2.4-2.8mL/g) is larger than that of heavy calcium carbonate produced by mechanical method (1.1-1.9mL/g), it is called light calcium carbonate. It can be used in rubber industry, plastic industry, paint industry, water-based paint industry, paper industry, cable industry and other industries.

Also called precipitated calcium carbonate, or light calcium for short, is prepared by calcining limestone and other raw materials to generate lime (the main component is calcium oxide) and carbon dioxide, adding water to digest the lime to generate lime milk (the main component is calcium hydroxide), then introducing carbon dioxide to carbonize the lime milk to generate calcium carbonate precipitate, and finally dehydrating, drying and pulverizing. Or the calcium carbonate precipitate is generated by double decomposition reaction of sodium carbonate and calcium chloride, and then is dehydrated, dried and crushed. Light calcium carbonate is called light calcium carbonate because its settling volume (2.4-2.8mL/g) is larger than that of heavy calcium carbonate (1.1-1.9mL/g).
