Syringes come in many different sizes and variations but the most common difference between them is the way they attach to a needle. Syringes of all types attach to a needle via two standardised tip types – the Luer Lock or the Luer Slip.
The Luer Lock Syringe
A Luer Lock or Luer Lok syringe allows a needle to be twisted onto the tip and then locked in place. This is achieved by having a Luer Slip centre tip which is surrounded by a screw locking thread. The needle and the syringe are twisted together and the screw thread prevents the Luer Slip connector from coming off. Luer Lock syringes are advised for application when back pressures are higher and where leakage avoidance is essential.
Benefits:
Provides a more secure connection due to the screw thread design which holds the needle in place more effectively
Prevents the accidental removal of the needle during the injection of fluids making them much more reliable
Greatly reduces the chance of leakage by forming a more permanent seal
The Luer Slip Syringe
Luer Slip syringes allow a needle to be simply pushed on to the end of the tip. It has a tapered tip which fits exactly into the female counterpart of the adjoining needle. The 6% conical taper of the tip is defined by an internationally agreed standard which means that needles made by any manufacturer will fit into all Luer Slip syringes. The key with using Luer Slip syringes however is to ensure a quality connection. Some tend to simply just push the syringe and the needle together however while this works a lot of the time, it is not perfect. A much better seal can be made by applying a small twist, approx 1/4 turn, which will improve the connection strength and reduces the chances of leakage.
Benefits:
Tend to be cheaper than Luer Lock syringes because of their less complicated design
Can be safely used for low pressure applications if the seal has been applied correctly
