I did a prank on my cousin to burn his house. It was drizzling that day but the magnesium didn't burn out. Thank you for everything, we shared a great laugh.

I bought this for my son for a stocking stuffer, and he bought me one too! Although this looks like a novelty item, it actually does work. We live on acreage so we have a fire pit that we burn boxes and paper with. This really ignited the paper with just a few tries. Sparks fly as you strike it. This is a great item to take for safety if you hike, or if you need to escape the zombie apocalypse. Either way, have one in your car or key chain should a need arise that you need to build a fire to warm your self or fend off the zombies. Should work for vampires too. Its a small price to pay for safety if you need it.

I am not a rabid survivalist with a six months supply of beef sticks and hard tack; I am not a militia member with a thousand rounds set aside to shoot zombies; I am not at a safe remove from SARS, a measles outbreak caused by mom's who fear inoculations more than the illnesses they prevent; and I am not a guy who figures I will ascend come the rapture.
I am a guy with some diet conscious protein powder, bottled water (ours is so loaded with minerals you can crunch it as you drink), an emergency radio, some thermal blankets, and this weird fire starter.
Why you ask? Because when I was a Boy Scout in San Francisco and I could not start a fire because the fog was thick. I will not trust an ever light, diamond match, anything other than this technology.
I have seen The Quest for Fire and I know that I think the chick was hot but I do not stand a chance with a fire drill. Tom Hanks could do it. I never.
Certain things are beyond my range.
But I have struck the mag and know I can make a spark; so I am set.
Good luck when it comes.

When I bought this so many years ago, I put it in my youngest son's stocking as a stocking stuffer gift for Christmas. He pretended to be happy, but I could see that he wasn't very interested in it, and I understood why - it only looked like a simple block of metal. It sat unused in his room until one day when we decided to go camping. If I hadn't reminded him he would have forgotten it, but he was very glad afterwards that I did so. Around dusk we gathered some wood to start a fire and I found some tinder and kindling for him to use. At first he tried to use the scraper while it was still attached to the magnesium block and didn't understand that in order to light a fire, you must first scrape off some magnesium from the block and THEN scrape the flint. After a few failed attempts and some pitiful whining, my son was able to light a fire and I saw his eyes light up brighter than the flames! The compass it came with almost got lost but I fixed that problem by attaching it to the block with a piece of clear tape. Perhaps the compass could be better affixed to the block in future productions. Learn from my son's mistakes and light a fire the first time (if you want to accomplish this faster, I recommend using a knife to scrape off a generous pile of magnesium before you light the flint). Great purchase!
