Description
Mangiferin can be found in many plant species, among which the mango tree (Mangifera indica) is one of the primary sources.
It is a plant natural polyphenol of C-glycosylxanthone structure and possesses various pharmacological activities such as: antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-atherosclerotic, anti-allergenic, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, immunomodulatory, antidiabetic, anti-sclerotic, anti-microbial, anti-viral, MAO (monoamine oxidases - enzymes that catalyze the oxidation of monoamines) inhibiting, memory improving, and cardio, heptato, and neuroprotective.
Mangiferin is also radioprotective against X-ray, gamma, and UV radiation, which is why it is also used in cosmetics for antioxidant and UV-protecting properties.

Main function:
1. With obvious central nervous system excitability: Intraperitoneal injection of mangiferin (JP) resulted in symptoms of motor tremor, vertical hair, forced tearing and increased autonomic activity in all subjects. The peak of these behavioral changes after 30min of administration and maintain to 60min, it gradually decreased after 120min.
2. Anti-viral: Mangiferin has the effect of anti herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV- I) in vitro, and the rate of plaque reduction is 56.8%. Its antiviral effect is attributed to its ability to inhibit viral replication in cells.
3. Radiation resistance: Mangiferin is a natural antioxidant that free radical scavenging. It is also a natural radiation protective agent, 4 phenolic hydroxyl groups in the molecular structure of the electrophilic ability and benzene is good energy trap, therefore biological molecules by irradiation induced free radical transfer of a set, so it can protect the biological molecular.
4. Anti-tumor: In normal, vivo or vitro mice treated with tumor, Mangiferin can improve cytotoxicity of spleen cells and peritoneal macrophages. Mangiferin could effectively inhibit the inhibition of adriamycin (Dox) on cytochrome C oxidase in mitochondria, and had no effect on the antitumor activity of Dox.
5. Anti-diabetic: Oral administration of Mangiferin and its glucoside, no change of blood glucose level in normal mice, but it could decrease the blood glucose concentration in spontaneous diabetic animal model of KK-Ay mice and serum insulin levels also decreased. Intraperitoneal injection of Mangiferin, can reduce diabetic rats caused by oxidative damage of glycosylated hemoglobin and serum creatine phosphokinase (the amount of CPK).
6. Others: Mangiferin has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic and immunomodulatory effects. Pharmacological effects of Mangiferin is clear; plant sources are widely. At present the main clinical application is use in respiratory diseases. Although the Mangiferin has limitation in clinical application because of poor performance due to its solubility, but its anticancer, antiviral and anti diabetes activity has been paid more and more attention with the research. Further, Mangiferin will have good prospects for development.
