Gutter Filter Foam

 

Filter sponge, also known as reticulated sponge, is a porous, low-density, reticulated flexible polyester/polyether urethane sponge. With an open cell structure and three dimensional skeletal strand structure. 

 

The open cell sponge specifically manufactured for aquarium and pond use has a much larger inner surface area for beneficial biological capacity than the cheap close cell sponge in the market. The reticulated structure also provides better flow rate of water and less chance of clog. 

You can use it in any aquarium or pond filter, sump, wet/dry, canister, power filter etc. or your HMF DIY project. It can be trimmed to any size with a utility knife. 

The size of pores is measure in pores per inch (PPI). The sponge with higher PPI has more pores in it. More pores means larger biological filtration capacity but with less water flow through rate and needs to be cleaned more often. It is recommended to use combination of sponge with difference PPI to get the best result.

Filter sponge, also known as reticulated sponge, is a porous, low-density type of polyurethane sponge with an open cell structure. Filter sponge has a near-infinite amount of applications due to the following characteristics:

Cell Structure

 

 

Filter sponge operates as a depth-loading filter, as opposed to a surface-loading filter, essentially trapping dust particles within its cells.

 

The cell structure of filter sponge is remarkable in that each cell has a dodecahedron shape (12 sided), the cell’s walls or “struts” are comprised entirely of organic polymers (polyurethane, polyether, polyester) & the empty space or “windows,” between each strut, comprise 95% - 98% of the filter sponge’s mass.

 

The size, shape & distribution of cells within filter sponge can be manipulated during manufacture to provide precisely the desired porosity level, measured in PPI or pores per inch.
