About Gum Arabic

Gum Arabic, also known as Gum Acacia, is an exudate, or dried sap, from Acacia trees. The Acacia senegal and Acacia seyal species are the main sources of Gum Arabic. The production zone, known as the Gum Belt, is a strip which stretches across North Africa from Senegal to Eritrea. Major producing countries are Sudan, Mali, Nigeria and Senegal, with Sudan being the world’s largest producer of Gum Arabic.

It is a safe and harmless thickener that is naturally solidified in the air. Light white to pale yellow brown translucent block, or white to orange-brown granular or powder, is a polymer electrolyte with a molecular weight of 22-30 million. Odorless, tasteless, and flammable. It can be gradually dissolved into an acidic viscous liquid in water. After some time, the viscosity is reduced, the solubility is about 50% (W/V), and it is insoluble in ethanol. Forms a stable coacervate with gelatin or albumin. Precipitating with an acidic alcohol gives free arabic acid.

Gum arabic can also be widely used in beverage production, such as in the production of soft drink concentrates to stabilize flavor and essential oils. It is often used in candy manufacturing, like traditional hard (wine) gummy candy, soft candy, and also used in the manufacture of gum, with strong adhesion and soft elasticity, generally 20-25%. It can also be used as a foam stabilizer for marshmallows.

Printing industry

-The printing layout is mainly rubbing gum arabic.

Gum arabic is a solid crystalline body that swells when it is soaked in water and eventually becomes a viscous colloidal solution. After the liquid colloid is rubbed on the printing plate to evaporate the water, the glue liquid is restored from the liquid state to the original solid state and adsorbed on the printing plate. The function is that after the glue is dried, the plate is covered with a hardened film to isolate the plate from the air, thereby preventing the oxidation from occurring.

Gum arabic contains arabic acid (X-COOH), which is a good cleansing agent for the greasy surface. The surface of the gum is more effective after drying.

After the gum is rubbed on the plate, the glue contacts the inorganic salt layer of the plate to form a better hydrophilic film, which improves the hydrophilicity of the plate.
