Polyglactin suture is a braided and coated synthetic absorbable suture and is a co-polymer of 90% Glycolide and 10% L-lactide. Polyglactin 910 sutures retain tensile strength of about 70% of initial strength at 14 days of implantation. Polyglactin 910 sutures are indicated for soft tissue approximation and ligation. Polyglactin sutures have mild tissue reaction during the absorption process.
Polyglactin suture is a much superior alternative to catgut sutures since its absorption is more predictable, tensile strength is better and it exhibits little or no tissue reaction. Polyglactin sutures also exhibit better knotting properties compared to PGA sutures.
