GN ReSound LiNX2 5
The LiNX2 5 is a standard ’Made for iPhone (MFI)’ hearing aid manufactured by GN ReSound and supersedes the LiNX 5. It incorporates the very latest version of GN ReSound’s SmartRange dual-core processing chip (Coyote 4.5) which dedicates one processor to wireless functionality and the other to sound processing. The benefits of this is twice the processing power than all previous processing chips manufactured by GN ReSound and quicker computing of digital algorithms without additional battery consumption. In addition, the LiNX2 5 is available in many form factors with some custom hearing aid styles also having MFI functionality:
It has 12 WARP channels which mimic the function of the human organ of hearing (cochlea), moderate noise reduction using the latest algorithm (Noise Tracker II), mild expansion and mild wind noise reduction. In addition, the LiNX2 5 incorporatesBinaural Fusion technology which allows for both hearing aids to act as one system through wireless of exchange information via 2.4 GHz technology. This technology supports the synchronization of volume adjustments and program changes made on one hearing aid to both hearing aids. It also allows for a feature called ‘Comfort Phone’. This is when the ‘telephone ear’ hearing aid automatically changes to a dedicated phone program whilst the ‘non-telephone ear’ hearing aid reduces in volume slightly to help you concentrate better whilst still being aware of your environment. In addition this technology supportsSynchronized Acceptance Manager which gradually, through coordination between hearing aids, increases the sound level over a specified period of time to allow new users of hearing aids the opportunity to adjust and adapt to amplification.
The LiNX2 5 can also analyse and classify 7 different listening environments (Environmental Classifier) and keep track of any manual volume adjustments made in each environment (Datalogging). This allows for further personalisation of the hearing aid through additional programs for each environment if required. The LiNX2 5 additionally has Adaptive Directionalitywhereby the hearing aid, when in background noise, instantly projects a beam towards the speech signal. Alternatively, the LiNX2 5 can gradually and seamlessly switch focus between picking up sounds from all around the listener in quiet and directly in front when in background noise to highlight speech {SoftSwitching). Also, the LiNX2 5 when in directional mode mimics the real-ear by applying directionality in the high frequencies only and allowing the low frequencies to be heard from all around. Not only does this provide better spatial (3D) hearing through preservation of natural timing differences that exist between the two ears (which are sometimes lost if directionality is applied to the low frequencies) when a sound originates one side or another, it also helps to promote better sound quality and better hearing in noise (Directional Mix). Furthermore, one hearing aid can be programmed to always pick up sounds in front of you (focus ear) and the other from all around you (monitor ear) to assist the wearer concentrate on a speaker whilst still being aware of their environment (Natural Directionality II).
The LiNX2 5 includes ’Sound Shaper’ which is a frequency compression algorithm designed to help high frequency sounds be heard and processed effectively by the listener if their hearing is severely/profoundly affected in this frequency range. It is accomplished by compressing high frequency sounds into a lower frequency range where the listener’s hearing loss is less affected. Importantly, Sound Shaper only performs this at the high frequencies leaving the lower frequencies untouched. The LiNX2 5 also incorporates the industry’s leading feedback algorithm (DFS Ultra II with Music Mode). This not only helps to reduce annoying whistling from your hearing aids but preserves the sound quality of music which can sometimes be distorted by feedback algorithms. Furthermore, the LiNX2 5 has in-built tinnitus therapy in form of ’Tinnitus Sound Generator and Nature Sounds’. This feature is designed to help break the ‘vicious cycle’ of tinnitus by diverting attention away from it using a range of sounds including six installed soothing ‘water-inspired’ nature sounds such as ‘Shoreline’ and ‘Beach Surf’.
The LiNX2 5 is compatible with GN ReSound’s unique 2.4 GHz wireless accessories such as the Unite Mini Microphone, Unite TV Streamer 2, Unite Phone Clip+ and Unite Remote Control 2. Being ’Made for iPhone’ the LiNX2 5 can also connect directly to selected iPhones, iPads and the iPod Touch without any intermediate device using 2.4 GHz wireless technology. As a result, listeners can use the LiNX2 5 as bluetooth stereo headphones and directly stream phone conversation as well as all other audio such as music. Moreover, with a simple ’triple-click’ of the iPhone or iPad’s home button, the listener can convert the device into a remote microphone and stream sounds directly into the LiNX2 5, similarly to the Unite Mini Microphone. Furthermore, listeners can download the ’ReSound Smart App’ onto their iPhone and iPad via the Apple App Store, and now also onto their Galaxy S 4, 5 & 6 via Google Play, enabling them to alter the volume, adjust treble and bass, check battery status, add favourite programmes, find misplaced hearing aids and control the pitch and modulation of the tinnitus masker noise.
