Our Matcha “Fuji 1st” is grown at the tea farm close to Mt. Fuji in Shizuoka, hence it was named “Fuji 1st”.

The meeting between Japan and green tea took place centuries ago when a monk brought back tea plant seeds with him from a trip to China and planted them in Shizuoka. In doing so he quite literally planted the seeds of a drink and a culture that is now integral to life in Japan.

Shizuoka’s green tea was already being mentioned in the haiku verse of Matsuo Basho, the most celebrated poet of Edo Period, highlighting its status as a much treasured product in Japan.

The family-run farm and all the hard-working people who have contributed building innovative farming methods that has been used for green tea for centuries has been adapted to Matcha to craft the very first organic matcha in Shizuoka prefecture.
An organic matcha fed by fresh waters that pour down from the slopes of Mt. Fuji, hence it was named “Fuji 1st”.


Leaves shaded four 4 weeks & hand picked
During the last four weeks of their lives, the Tencha trees are shaded from direct sunlight by bamboo mats, after that the best leaves of the plants are hand picked

(only the bud and top three leaves).
All sorts of chemical changes take place in the plant during the shading period :
More amino acids and other compounds responsible for the distinctive aroma and flavor of the matcha, as well as chlorophyll which renders their leaves an extremely dark hue of green.
