SICILY WORLD WAR II 1943


We will tell about the story of the Anglo-American disembarkation in Sicily in July 1943 that began the defeat of the Nazi-fascist in Italy and in Europe. We will bring you back to the places of "Operation Husky", along the military routes of the Allied advance, visiting the cities and places that saw the protagonists of the armies but also the civilian population, visiting the artifacts that are still witness of this event.

A moment of history that becomes a trip to Sicily, along the coast that from Licata and Gela arrives on the beaches of the Syracuse area of Pachino and Noto, places where the liberation of Europe began.

We will visit the most significant places of the "Husky Operation": 

• The landing beaches.
• The places of the most important battles.

• The anti-aircraft shelters. 

• The War Cemeteries.
• The places made famous by the reports of Phil Stern and Robert Capa.
• The Museum dedicated to Robert Capa in Troina.
• The Pavilion dedicated to Phil Stern at the Museum of the Landing in Catania.


Duration: 7 days / 6 nights
Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive in Catania and transfer to the Hotel. Meet your Tour Manager for a briefing of the program.

Meals: Welcome dinner
Overnight: Catania area


Day 2

Day dedicated entirely to the journey made by the liberation troops immediately after the landing. We will visit the most important places of the landing in Sicily: the coast that goes from the beaches of Gela and Licata to the coast of Syracuse (Marzamemi, Avola, Portopalo), where the American, British, Canadian and Commonwealth troops landed. Various stops planned in Gela (Ponte di Dirillo), 
Licata (anti-raid underground shelter, the Tholos,

 the Anti-Raid Shelter in Via Marconi and the Husky Operation exhibit) and Cassibile (Gelsomineto beach and armistice site). Lunch along the way. Visit of the Ipogeo in Piazza Duomo, used as an air raid shelter, and walk in baroque island of Ortigia.

Overnight: Catania 

Day 3

Guided tour of Syracuse (Catacombs of Saint Lucia, used as an air raid shelter, and castle Eurialo at Belvedere, magnificent Greek fortress of great strategic importance) and continuation along the coast to Augusta, home to the military port and the Hangar for airships. Free time for lunch. On the road to Catania, stop at the Battle of Primosole and at the Bicocca English Military Cemetery where more than 2100 Commonwealth soldiers are buried during the battles of the Husky Operation. Visit to the illuminated historical center (Piazza Duomo, Teatro Massimo, Piazza Università, etc.).

Day 4

Day dedicated to the Ionian coast of Sicily. It starts with a panoramic stop over the Strait of Messina, the scene of the retreat of the Nazi-Fascist forces during the Lehrgang operation. We continue to Taormina, the greatest attraction of Sicilian tourism and an important site of international intelligence and espionage at the time of the second world war. Free time for lunch. Following the ascent of Etna, the highest volcano in Europe and unforgettable 

view of the Ionian coast between ancient woods and ancient lava flows. A unique experience that is worth the trip to Sicily. On the path followed by the German-Italian forces during their retreat, we will reach Castiglione di Sicilia, home of the terrible Nazi massacre. Stop in an Etna winery for a tasting of Sicilian wines. Back to the hotel.

Day 5

Journey in the heart of Sicily, towards the territory of the province of Enna, on the places of the march of the Canadian and US troops. Stop at the Canadian Cemetery in Agira. Continue to Assoro, Leonforte, Nicosia, Sperlinga, and Troina, in search of the symbolic places of the Husky Operation, where bloody battles occurred, discovering beautiful historic centers where time seems to have stopped at the time of Norman domination.

Day 6

Day dedicated to the visit of the city of Catania and its historical center: the characteristic popular markets and the main monuments of the typical lava stone baroque. Piazza Duomo (with the relics of Sant'Agata), Piazza Università, Convent of the Benedictines (second in Europe in terms of size), the Massimo Theater dedicated to the Catania citizen Vincenzo Bellini. We will visit some undergrounds used as anti-aircraft shelters and the monuments of the historic center used by the Amgot. Free time for lunch. Visit the Landing Museum at the "Le Ciminiere" Exhibition Center. Access to the "Phil Stern Pavillon" dedicated to the unforgettable American war photographer and his trip to Sicily on the 70th anniversary of the landing.

Day 7
Transfer to Catania airport for the return flight. It is possible to extend the stay on demand to visits the archaeological sites or spend time at leisure in a Sicilian Resorts.
