Introduction:
1) 6061 is the least expensive and most versatile of the heat-treatable aluminum alloys. Comprised of magnesium and silicon, it is heat-treatable for improved strength. 6061 offers a range of good mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. It can be fabricated by most of the commonly used techniques. In the annealed condition, 6061 has good workability. Requires much larger inside bend radii than 5052-H32, but it can be formed. 6061 offers a good combination of weldability, corrosion resistance, and strength after heat treatment. Since it looses appreciable strength when welded, the 5000 series alloys replace it in dump body and some marine applications.
2) It can be welded by all methods and can be furnace-brazed. It is available in the clad form ("Alclad") with a thin surface layer of high purity aluminum to improve both appearance and corrosion resistance.
