Menthol is the solid constituent of oil of mint, and was formerly known as peppermint camphor. It is a

white crystalline compound with a characteristic pungent odor.They dissolve readily into alcohol or

essential oils, and they can also be dissolved into water or oil. Menthol imparts a tingling sensation to

the skin and used in skin fresheners like after-shave and suntan lotions. It has a local anesthetic property

for short-term relief of minor sore throat and minor muscle aches.

Menthol is easily dehydrated to give mainly 3-menthene, by the action of 2% sulfuric acid. PCl5 gives menthyl chloride.
