Introduction:

It is white or colorless crystalline powder,colorless monoclinic crystal. Both KIO3.HIO3 and KIO3.2HIO3are colorless monoclinic crystal, odorless. It is soluble in the boiling water easily, and can be melted in water,dilute acid, ethanediamine, aminoethyl alcohol and Potassium iodide solution, but it is soluble in liquid sulphur dioxide and iquid sulphur dioxide slightly. Moreover, insoluble in alcohol and ammonia. As strong oxidizer, it will be reduced and free the iodine when reacting with some reducing substances, such as hydrogen sulfide, hydriodic acid, sulfur dioxide and hydrogen etc. Potassium iodatesolution can be reduced to iodide by x- ray or alpha partical, and it will burn slightly suddenly if you put the solid Potassium iodate on red-hot charcoal. When mixed with combustible objects, it will explode if they collide each other. Potassium iodate can be oxidized to potassium periodate by some stronger oxidizing agent, such as chlorine and hypochloric acid In alkaline medium.
