Annual or perennial herb, 1-2 meters high. Root spindle-shaped, multi-stem root, or adventitious roots at the base of the proximal stem. Stems glabrous or slightly pilose. Leaves secondary pinnately lobed, lobes linear or filamentous. Flower head solitary, 3-6 cm in diameter. The outer bracts are lanceolate or linear-lanceolate, nearly leathery, pale green, with dark purple stripes. Tongue flower purplish red, pink or white; tongue ellipsoid obovate, 2-3 cm long, 1.2-1.8 cm wide, 3-5 blunt teeth; tubular flower yellow, length 6-8 mm, tube short, Upper cylindrical, with lanceolate lobes.
