Iridium has a density of 22.56g/cm3, a melting point of 2454 C, and the service temperature of iridium products can reach 2100-2200 C. Iridium has high modulus of elasticity (538.3GPa), low Poisson coefficient (0.26), and poor plasticity at low temperature. Iridium is the most corrosion-resistant metal. Dense Iridium is insoluble in all inorganic acids and is not etched by other metal melts. Like other platinum group metal alloys, iridium alloys can firmly adsorb organic compounds and can be used as catalyst materials.

1)Iridium is the only precious metal thermocouple that can measure temperature up to 2100 C in the atmosphere because of its high temperature oxidation resistance and thermoelectric properties. Iridium can be used as a container material for radioactive heat source. Iridium anodic oxide film is a promising electrochromic material. Ir192 is a gamma ray source, which can be used for nondestructive testing and radiochemical therapy. Iridium is also an important alloying element
