A lead-acid cell is made of three basic components: the electrodes (anode + cathode) and electrolyte. The anode is the negative
terminal and the cathode is the positive terminal. Connecting these is the electrolyte which drives the electrochemical reaction
that provides electricity. In a deep-cycle lead-acid cell, the negative plate is made of solid lead, and the positive plate is
made of lead dioxide. Between them is an insulator/separator that prevents them from touching and short circuiting. The
electrolyte in a lead-acid battery is water and sulphuric acid. Three reactions take place when discharging, causing the
composition of these components to change; in turn reducing the available capacity
What is Lead Acid Battery?
Introduction:
• A battery is a storage device which stores power.
• As shown in the figure-1, it contains six cells with each having 2V value.
• Materials used are led peroxide (PbO2), sponge led (Pb) and dilute sulfuric acid (H2SO4)
• Positive plate of lead acid battery is made of PbO2 which is dark brown hard and brittle substance.
• Negative plate of lead acid battery is made of pure led in soft sponge condition (Pb).
• Here H2SO4 uses water to acid ratio of 3:1
