Ladder is the important access facility of a ship. It can be divided into internal ladder and external ladder according to its location. External ladder provides access for passengers and goods between inboard side and outboard side. Common external ladders include accommodation ladder/gangway, boarding rope ladder, boarding gangplank and pilot ladder.

 

In general, accommodation ladder refers to the ladder applied for boarding, which locates in sides of a ship . It’s stored inboard when not in use and would be inclined along broadside in service. Accommodation ladder is recommended to use in passenger ships as well as other large and medium ships. Generally, each side is supposed to be installed with one set.

 

Accommodation ladder is comprised of following components:

1. section of ladder: made up of ladder frame and steps

2. upper platform: the platform of accommodation ladder installed at the exit of shipboard 

3. lower platform: the platform installed at the bottom of accommodation ladder

4. ladder reversing gear: device used to turn the accommodation ladder over from operation position to storage position and back.

5. yoke for accommodation ladder: lifting appliance connected with cables holding the ladder frame

6. accommodation ladder winch: dedicated winch for operation and support of accommodation ladder

 

In addition, accommodation ladder must be provided with a series of associated equipment, including safety net, life buoy, illumination and data plate.
