African Swine Fever Virus
What is African swine fever?
African swine fever (ASF) is a highly contagious haemorrhagic viral disease of domestic and wild pigs, which is responsible for serious economic and production losses.
It is caused by a large DNA virus of the Asfarviridae family, which also infects ticks of the genus Ornithodoros.
Although signs of ASF and classical swine fever (CSF) may be similar, the ASF virus is unrelated to the CSF virus.
ASF is a disease listed in the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) Terrestrial Animal Health Code and must be reported to the OIE.
Transmission and spread
The epidemiology of ASF is complex and varies depending on the environment, types of pig production systems, the presence/absence of competent tick vectors, human behaviour, and the presence/absence of wild pigs.Routes of transmission can include:
- direct contact with infected domestic or wild pigs;
- indirect contact, through ingestion of contaminated material (e.g. food waste, feed, or garbage);
- contaminated fomites, or biological vectors (soft ticks of the genus Ornithodoros) where present.
TEST PROCEDURE
1. Collect dog’s ocular and nasopharyngeal secretions with the swab stick. Make the swab wet sufficiently.
2. Insert the wet swab into the provided assay buffer tube. Agitate it to assure good sample extraction.
3. If using serum sample, please do a dilution of 1:2 with the provided assay buffer.
4.Take out the cassette from the foil pouch and place it horizontally.
5. Gradually drip 2-3 drops of sample extraction into the sample hole .
6. Interpret the result in 5-10 minutes. Result after 10 minutes is considered as invalid.
Positive: The presence of both C band and T band, no matter T band is clear or vague.
Negative: Only clear C band appears.
Invalid: No colored band appears in C zone, no matter whether T band appears.
