Oxidation pond is also known as stabilization pond or lagoon which is taken black pond liner as the anti seepage lining system . The oxidation pond is often the large, shallow ponds designed to treat waste water through the interaction of sunlight, bacteria and algae within an oxidation pond heterotrophic bacteria degrade organic matter in the sewage which results in production of cellular material and minerals. The production of these supports the growth of algae in the oxidation pond. Sludge deposits in the pond must eventually be removed by dredging. Algae remaining in the pond effluent can be removed by filtration or by a combination of chemical treatment and settling.

Oxidation ponds are a popular sewage treatment method for small communities because of their low construction and operating costs. New oxidation ponds can treat sewage to Standard B effluent level but require maintenance and periodic desludging in order to maintain this standard.
