CMC Na was prepared from cellulose by two-step method. The first is the alkalization process of cellulose. After the reaction of cellulose and sodium hydroxide, alkali cellulose is formed, and then alkali cellulose reacts with chloroacetic acid to form CMC Na, which is called etherification reaction. [5]
The reaction system must be alkaline. This process belongs to the synthesis of Williamson ether. The reaction mechanism is nucleophilic substitution. The reaction system is alkaline, which is accompanied by some side reactions in the presence of water, such as the generation of by-products such as sodium hydroxyacetate and hydroxyacetic acid. Due to the existence of side reactions, the consumption of alkali and etherifying agent will be increased, and the etherification efficiency will be reduced; meanwhile, sodium hydroxyacetate, hydroxyacetic acid and more salt impurities will be generated in the side reactions, which will reduce the purity and performance of the products. In order to inhibit the side reaction, it is not only necessary to use the alkali reasonably, control the dosage of water system, concentration of alkali and agitation mode, with the purpose of sufficient alkalization, but also to consider the requirements of viscosity and degree of substitution of the product, and comprehensively consider the factors such as agitation speed and temperature control, so as to improve the etherification rate and inhibit the side reaction.
According to the different etherification media, the industrial production of CMC Na can be divided into two categories: water method and solvent method. The method of using water as reaction medium is called water medium method, which is used to produce CMC Na of medium and low level. The method using organic solvent as reaction medium is called solvent method, which is suitable for producing medium and high grade CMC Na. Both reactions are carried out in kneader, which belongs to kneading process and is the main method for CMC Na production at present
