The ultraviolet rays in the UVC spectrum can destroy the DNA structure in the genetic material of bacteria/viruses, killing them or deprive their ability to reproduce, so as to achieve the purpose of sterilization. Ultraviolet light is like a unique and powerful "light knife", a broad-spectrum sterilization method.
Short-wave ultraviolet rays are extremely harmful to the human body. Short-term exposure can burn the skin, while long-term or high-intensity exposure can cause skin cancer.
What are some key effects of UV radiation intensity?
Intensity of UV radiation is measured in the units of microwatts per square centimeter (μW/cm²) which is energy per square centimeter received.
UVC has an incomparable sterilization efficiency. The efficiency of killing bacteria and virus is about 99%-99.9%. For killing common bacteria and virus, takes less than 1 second. However, it usually takes 20 minutes to 1 hour for traditional chemical sterilization such as chlorines and ozone to achieve the sterilization effect of UVC.
Ozone is a strong oxidant, whose sterilization process is a biochemical oxidation reaction.
There are three forms of sterilization:
• Ozone can oxidize and break down the enzymes needed for the bacteria's internal glucose, making the bacteria inactivated and dead
• It directly interacts with bacteria and viruses, destroys their cell walls, DNA and RNA as well as the metabolism of bacteria, thus killing bacteria
• It penetrates cell membrane tissues into cells, and acts on the outer membrane of lipoproteins and internal lipopolysaccharides, causing the permeation distortion of bacteria to dissolve and die
