EMS: “Electrical Muscle Stimulation” is an internationally accepted and proven way of treating muscular injuries. It works by sending electronic pulses to the muscle needing treatment; this causes the muscle to exercise passively. When the muscle receives this signal it contracts as if the brain has sent the signal itself. As the signal strength increases, the muscle flexes as in physical exercise. Then when the pulse ceases, the muscle relaxes and the cycle starts over again, (Stimulation, Contraction and Relaxation.)
EM-3000 – Peroneal Nerve Stimulator for Activating the Dorsiflexors of the Foot
The EM-3000 features automatic adjustment of stimulation duration and delay which enables it to match different walking speeds. The heel/toe sensor allows it to sense whether the user is standing still or moving at different speeds. It is easy to set up and has several unique parameter settings. Stimulation can be delayed both at onset and end of stimulation meaning that it can be adjusted to patient requirements.
In order to clear the ground during swing-through phase the foot has to be dorsiflexed. Patients with a drop-foot have lost this ability which is where the EM-3000 Peroneal Stimulator can help compensate. A switch under the heel of the affected leg signals the EM-3000 when to commence stimulation and the duration. The foot is dorsiflexed for the appropriate time, irrespective of the walking speed.
The electronics of the EM-3000 creates electrical impulses, intensity, pulse rate and the method of activation may be altered with the press buttons. The status of stimulation is shown on the liquid crystal display.

Switch for Method
Selectable, H/T. Position “H” means heel. Place the heel switch under the heel of the affected leg and of activation stimulation begins when contact is interrupted. Position “T” means Toe. Some patients may have so much spasticity in the affected leg that they cannot place weight on the heel. In these cases, the stimulator can be activated via the front of the foot on the opposite leg.
The switch is placed under the front of the foot on the pulses when contact is completed.
Delay Start of Stimulation (D1)
Delaying the start of stimulation may be beneficial. The delay is adjustable between 0-50% of the gait cycle. Experimentation will determine the optimum settings.
Delay Stop of Stimulation (D2)
Delaying the point at which stimulation ceases may prevent the foot from dropping too quickly at heel strike. The delay is adjustable between 0-50% of the gait cycle. Experimentation will determine the optimum settings. This feature may also prevent excessive supination of the foot during stance phase
