Rongeurs are like pliers with a heavy, pointed jaw. With their heavy contrsuction, rongeurs are used for gnawing holes in bones during surgery. The scoop shaped tip of the rongeur is used for gouging the bone. Bone cutters are frequently used in orthopedic surgery or oral surgery. A rongeur is used to open a window in bone, often in the skull. It is used in neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery to expose areas for operation or to aid in removal of the brain
