About Nettle 

Stinging nettle or simply nettle (Urtica dioica) is a shrub that widely grows in the wild in the mountains of Nepal and elsewhere. Prized for its medicinal and nutritional properties abundant from roots to leaves for centuries, it still remains an under-appreciated weed although commercial production of its fiber has started, and the juice of its leaves, roots and stem is being used for natural dye. However, it is yet to gain momentum. Nepal is a leading, pioneer producer and exporter of this versatile natural organic nettle fiber. Although some Asian and European countries have also started commercial production lately, Nepal’s nettle fiber commands the superior position thanks to its authenticity and organic properties having grown in the high altitude Himalayan slopes and hill forest in the wild. What keeps Nepal’s nettle fiber apart is: it is not cultivated, but collected by the local hill dwellers and processed further through traditional methods. And if you are buying it you are indeed doing a philanthropic deed, i.e. helping the communities financially backward, especially the women who have limited or no other income-generating vocational option. Its harvesting process is more arduous than you think. Matured nettle stems are cut, leaves snapped off, bark extracted, bundled and boiled in water with wood ash, kept overnight and beaten with wooden bat/shaft to separate fibers from the outer greenish organic matters of the bark. Then the fibers are washed and a special type of clay is rubbed before drying to prevent them from sticking together. Once dry, the fibers are beaten off the dust and made into yarn with a spindle before weaving into fabric on a handloom or back-strap loom. Bleaching and dyeing are optional and are up to customers’ requirements.  No chemical is applied in this whole process! This is a strong fiber which is hollow inside that allows to accumulate air inside, making it one of the best natural insulating fibers for both summer and winter. It is ecologically one of the most sustainable and future fibers.

We only use organic natural fabrics supplied by a trusted chain of our suppliers who source those domestically produced materials from various local cooperatives formed in our initiation across the country.
