How many have ever tasted Japan's seafood delicacy, Sazae (Horned turban)? It is one species of shellfish which is only found in Japanese seas. It is a large kind of conch which can grows up to 15cm long. Their ordinary size varies from 5 - 8 cm, but there is one exception. Kama-Sazae (Kama means Large Kettle). It grows as big as 15 cm and weighs 0.5 kgs! Some may have seen how Japanese female free divers called Ama-San scuba-dive and reappear with baskets full of Sazae at their backs.
This shellfish foods are seaweeds and survives only with rich seagrass beds. Therefore, especially this large species is a barometer to know how well the marine environment is preserved.
Their meat is very savory and delicious with irresistible chewy texture . Great to grill, steam, simmer and of course, sashimi ( Eat raw ).
Once put into soup or curry, oh, it makes heavenly ones.
It is seasonal and very rare. But our fishery company, located along the Izu beach-line with the new ISO22000 compliant processing plant, engaged the most advanced rapid alcohol freezing technology to produce this very fresh and hygienic frozen Kama-Sazae.

Defreezing before serving by running water for 30 minutes is highly recommended. Due to the very limited catch, only Gift-Box version is on sale. Total 3 packs inside one Gift Box that weighs about 1.5 kgs. 1 is for Sashimi (Raw), 1 is lightly steamed and simmered. And another one is special concoction of their liver paste mixed with olive oil and white wine. You can eat straight little by little. Fine finger-food for any spirits and wine. Or you can use it as luxury sauce or tartar sauce. Complete with 3 large shells. Savor this extremely rare delicacy from the beautiful sea waters in Shizuoka, Japan!
