FAQ

1. WHAT ARE ESSENTIAL OILS?
Essential oils are simply highly concentrated compounds extracted from the seeds, leaves, flowers, bark, roots or fruits of plants and trees. Essential oils are usually distilled via a steaming process which helps separate the desired botanical oils from the rest of the plant material.

2. WHAT ARE THEY USED FOR?
The internet is full of misinformation and countless unsubstantiated health claims when it comes to essential oils. While they’ve been used for centuries to help relief health issues and support wellness, scientists have only somewhat recently started researching their potential health benefits.

3. HOW DO I APPLY THEM?
Now that you understand what essential oils are as well as some of their benefits, you might be wondering: But how do I use them?
While there are limitless ways to incorporate essential oils into your natural lifestyle, there are 3 main application methods:
Aromatherapy, DIY mixtures, and topical.
Aromatherapy is the most popular approach, and involves using a diffuser or simple inhalation to harness the beneficial aromas of essential oils. Adding a few drops of your favorite essential oil to DIY mixtures like homemade soaps, cleaners, or natural air fresheners is a fun way to enjoy essential oils’ therapeutic qualities. Because of their small molecule weight, essential oils are readily absorbed into the skin, making topical application an effective
way to enjoy these organic oils. After proper dilution with carrier oil, essential oil mixtures can be applied directly to the
skin as a soothing lotion or balm.

4. SHOULD I CONSULT A DOCTOR BEFORE USING ESSENTIAL OILS?
Definitely! For many reasons—including possible contraindications with medicine, potential allergies, and underlying health
issues—we strongly suggest consulting a physician before starting an essential oil regimen, especially with the elderly and
children. Essential oils, while natural, are highly concentrated and misuse can cause irritation and other unwanted reactions.

5. DO I NEED TO DILUTE THEM?
Absolutely! Essential oils are much too concentrated to use undiluted. It’s a common misconception that diluting essential oils with carrier oil or other DIY mixture will reduce their effectiveness, but that’s simply not true. In fact, carrier oils can increase efficacy and the aroma therapeutic effects of your chosen essential oil by preventing evaporation and premature absorption into the body. Failing to dilute essential oils before use can lead to severe skin irritation, rashes, or more serious health complications like respiratory issues. The exact amounts will vary, but start by adding a few drops of your favorite essential oil to carrier oil like almond, avocado or coconut oil, or to a mixture like a DIY soap or homemade natural cleaner. Start small and increase the amount of essential oil as needed—generally, aim for somewhere in the 1-4% strength range.

6. What specific tests do you perform for essential oils?
Our essential oil testing includes both physical testing — sensory evaluation, optical rotation and specific gravity — and gas chromatography (GC) testing for every oil. This extensive testing provides complete confidence that our oils are 100% pure and authentic, and we offer a quality guarantee to our customers.

7. Is there any difference between organic oil and non-organic oil?
Certified organic oils come from plants that are cultivated, harvested and distilled in accordance with certified organic
regulations. Certified organic growers must always take long-term sustainability into account as part of the certification
process, and supporting organic farmers is a way for the consumer to commit to the health and sustainability of our planet.

8. What does "certified organic" mean?
"Certified organic" is a labeling term that denotes products produced under the authority of the Organic Foods Production Act. The act provides for a National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) that develops and recommends the standards for the National Organic Program (NOP) as administered by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). A certified organic designation means that a state or private certification organization that is accredited by the USDA has verified that the product meets its strict organic standards. The certifier inspects the location where the organic product is produced and handled to ensure that all the rules necessary to meet USDA organic standards are being followed. Companies that handle or process organic products before it gets to the local supermarket or restaurant must also be certified and inspected annually to ensure continued compliance. (In order to maintain their accredited certifier status with the USDA, certifiers are required to conduct annual on-site inspections of all their clients.)

9. What is a hydrosol?
The leftover water from the steam or water distillation of an essential oil is called a hydrosol. Hydrosols are mostly water, with the water-soluble components of the plant not found in the essential oil. They usually contain a very tiny bit of essential oil — at least enough to give the hydrosol the faint aroma of the oil. They are considered great additions to skin toners and sprays, masks and lotions where they are valued for their astringent, soothing and rejuvenating qualities. Because they are almost all water, they can be used directly on the skin without dilution.

10. What is the difference between fragrance oil and an essential oil?
Essential oils are distilled from the leaves, roots, flowers, seeds, tops, or fruits of plants. They are the highly concentrated,
volatile, aromatic components of the plants or plant parts from which they are distilled. A fragrance is a combination of various natural and synthetic aroma chemicals, created in the lab by an aroma chemist. Fragrances attempt to mimic the aroma of an essential oil or the aroma of a plant that doesn't have an essential oil (an apple for example), or to create an entirely new scent. Fragrances are used in perfumery and to scent all types of products, such as toiletries, soaps, room fresheners, paper, tobacco products and paints. Only pure essential oils should be used in aromatherapy.

11. Can you put undiluted oils directly on your skin?
In general, this should be avoided, and oils should only be used with a recommended dilution based on the particular situation of the person and the intended use of the oil (from 1-10%). A few oils, like lavender and tea tree, can occasionally be applied directly, but in general, dilution is always recommended. With any oil we recommend a skin patch test. Always use caution.
