--- A lightweight, unfinished fabric that is mostly a solid color, and often mixed with poplin.
STORY
Traditionally made from wool, broadcloth originated in Flanders, Belgium, during the 11th century.
After the 1400s, Leiden, Holland, was home to the largest production of broadcloth, but England overtook Holland as the No. 1 producer in the 1500s.
Since the 1920s, broadcloth has often been used to describe poplin fabric.
PROPERTIES
• Smooth and sturdy due to tight weave
• Slightly lustrous
• Originally woven wider than required, but shrinks afterwards
• Sheer and lightweight, especially when light colored
• Non-stretchable due to the weaving structure
• Abrades easily due to ribbed surface
