The Valtellina
Valtellina is an alpine valley of glacial origin considered the most important mountain viticulture area in Italy.
Nestled between the Rhaetian and Orobie Alps, the valley
follows the course of the Adda river and stretches for over
100km from Lake Como to the Stelvio pass, benefiting from a unique microclimate characterized by marked temperature excursions between day and night and relatively scarce rainfall.
The vineyards
The Valtellina vineyards are located on the south facing, more sunny, Rhaetian side of the valley, where the steep slope of terraces of dry stone walls, enable an optimal insolation of its the land, mitigated thanks to the famous “mountain hanging” traditional grape variety, the Nebbiolo.

We use natural cultivation techniques, clean hydroelectric energy, we have completely eliminated the weeding in our vineyards and we utilize recycled materials as much as possible.
Patience
The secret for a wine like ours is to respect the right times. The times of viticulture are those of nature, for this reason it is important that they are not accelerated in any way.
We always wait for the right moment for harvesting, we let our wines age in cask and subsequently to be refined in bottles, giving them the opportunity to acquire all the characteristics that make them unique and unmistakable.
Tradition
Our vines are rooted in the tradition of viticulture in Valtellina, which has always been the main inspiration for everything we do. From “emergency” irrigation to strict compliance with the regulations, we believe that wine should be made just like in the past, in a natural way and in respect of the territory that originated a product so unique and special.
Company Profile
The history of Villa Walter Fontana has been deeply linked to the Valtellinese territory and its vineyards for over 60 years. In fact, as early as the middle of the last century, Walter Fontana assiduously frequented Valtellina’s cellars during his numerous stays in Bormio.
His great expertise in the field led him to collect over the years a legendary collection of wines and spirits, considered among the most relevant in Italy. His greatest passion was still Valtellina and its wine, a territory about which he appreciated and experimented, together with local winemakers, the evolution of vineyards dedicated to personalized productions.
Today the commitment of Villa Walter Fontana remains the one indicated by its founder: to promote a unique territory safeguarding its peculiarities and bringing it even closer to the consumers of the future.
