N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine (Vegan)
NAC, or N-acetyl-L-cysteine, is an antioxidant containing sulfhydryl groups, which can increase the free radical trapping agent inthe cell bank. It is also a mucus dissolvant, which works by breaking the disulfide (-S-S-) bonds of mucin peptide bonds, causing mucin to become small peptide chains that relax and clear the viscosity of sputum. NAC and glutathione have similar functions.Both have antioxidant properties based on mercapto function, and both can protect the body from oxidative damage caused by septic shock. NAC can inhibit apoptosis of nerve cells, but also induce apoptosis of smooth muscle cells. NAC also inhibits HIV replication and acts as a substrate for microsomal glutathione transferase (GST).
