Product Description

Germanium ATR Prism

Attenuated Total Refection (ATR) prisms operate by measuring the changes that occur in a totally reflected infrared beam when the beam comes in contact with a sample. WIth the ATR method, light penetration into the sample for total reflection is dependent on the refractive index of the prism and the sample, the wavelength and also the incidence angle.

Germanium (Ge) is a relatively hard, high-density, IR transmitting material that blocks UV and VIS wavelengths while allows IR from 2µm. Germanium has the highest refractive index of commonly available IR-transmitters and has low optical dispersion. This makes it desirable in aspects of lens design where its refractive index allows otherwise impossible specifications to be built.
