Spa Cover Maintenance Tips
Prevent Damage
Spa covers are made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) backed with cloth and sealed with a topcoat. This cover is fitted over a rigid polystyrene core. Be careful not to break the core. Doing so not only distorts the shape of your cover, but could lead to it become waterlogged and useless.
Don't put weight on the unsupported cover--don't walk on or allow children to jump on it. Avoid using sharp objects that might puncture the cover. Don't let pets walk on the cover.
Don't allow snow and ice to sit on the cover in winter--weight puts stress on the cover and moisture can damage it. Be careful removing snow; don't use a shovel with sharp edges that can dig in and cut the cover.
Don't carry or remove the cover by pulling on the tie-down straps or the corners, as this could cause them to tear. Grasp the cover by the handles or install a spa cover lifter. Don't drag the cover across the ground.
Secure the latches when you're not using the spa to prevent wind damage. If you do get a small tear or puncture in the cover, use a vinyl repair kit to patch it.

Clean your cover monthly with a mild soap in water. Rinse thoroughly with a hose. If the cover is extremely dirty, use a non-abrasive sponge. Remove tree sap by rubbing in a little vegetable oil.
Apply a vinyl conditioner. Some protectants have ingredients designed to protect your cover from the sun's rays. You can buy a conditioner made specifically for hot tub covers, but any vinyl conditioner sold at a hardware or auto parts store will do. Follow the directions on the conditioner package.
Keep chemicals in the spa properly adjusted to inhibit growth of mildew inside the cover. If mildew does form, try swabbing the area with vinegar and laying the cover in the sun for a day. This should kill the mildew. If that doesn't work, ask your spa dealer about a mildew cleaner.
