Chemical properties: According to the spherical hollow structure of fullerene (referred to as C60) molecule, it can be inferred that it should be aromatic and can carry out the reactions of general thick cyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, such as alkylation, reduction to generate hydrides, etc. It is well known that aromatic hydrocarbons generally exhibit electron-rich reactions and are prone to electrophilic substitution reactions with electrophiles. However, C60 shows the reactivity of electron-deficient compounds, that is, it tends to obtain electrons. It is difficult to react with electrophiles, but easy to react with nucleophiles such as NH3 and metals.

The structural characteristics of fullerene C60 determine its special physical and chemical properties, and it can be widely used in many disciplines. For example, alkali metal atoms can bond with C60 to synthesize "ionic" compounds and show very good superconductivity, while transition metal fullerene C60 compounds show good REDOX performance. C60 can be converted into diamond at high pressure, opening up a new source of diamond. The water-soluble host-guest complex formed by C60 with cyclodextrin and cyclic aromatic hydrocarbons will play an important role in supramolecular chemistry and biomimetic chemistry. Catalysts based on fullerene C60 can be used for previously unsynthesizable materials or to more efficiently synthesize existing materials. The ease with which carbon can be processed into fine fibers could lead to a high-temperature superconducting material that is superior to existing ceramic superconductors.
