Types of CNC Machining

Depending on the type of part that needs to be machined, there are different types of CNC machines best fit for the job. CNC mills consist of a multi-axis system (three, four, or five axes, depending on the part complexity). Lathemachines generally have 2 axes and cut pieces using a circular motion. Electric discharge machines (EDM) utilize electrical sparks into order to mold work pieces into the desired shape. Hobbing is another type of machining process used for cutting gears, splines, and sprockets. Additional machining types include plasma cutters and water jet cutters.

CNC Machining Processes



CNC Milling
If your part is any sort of shape other than cylindrical, or lacks rotational symmetry about some imaginary axis through the part body, then a CNC mill is likely the machine for you. With milling, the stock that the part will be cut from is usually a six-sided bar or sheet of material (though it can also be a cylindrical rod). This stock is fixtured to the bed of the machine and the features of the part are cut using a rotating tool such as a drill or endmill.

CNC Turning
For cylindrical parts such as pins, shafts, and spacers, or parts with general rotational symmetry, ‘turning’ them on a lathe is usually the simplest and most cost effective choice. Contrary to a mill, a lathe operates by fixturing cylindrical stock, called a rod, into a rotating chuck jaw on the machine. As this chuck rotates at a high RPM, so does the stock, and a fixed-orientation tool then translates along and across the stock to cut part features.

A CNC lathe equipped with live-tooling has all the capabilities of a standard lathe, but instead of relying solely on stationary tools, it can have rotating cutters such as drills or endmills, allowing for greater machining freedom and the introduction of asymmetrical features into the part without additional fixturing setups.


Electrical Discharge Machining
Da Feng offers two types of Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) processes, which are useful for cutting deep pockets and complex features such as gears and holes with a keyway. EDM is also a non-contact machining method and does not exert cutting forces on the part, therefore it works particularly well for delicate structures.
Gear Hobbing
Hobbing is a machining process for cutting gear features on both metal and non-metal parts. The gear teeth (or splines) are progressively cut into a cylindrical piece of material by a series of cuts made by a cutting tool called a hob. Hobbing allows you to achieve various gear shapes and sizes such as spur gears, worm gears and bevel gears. Although gear hobbing can be used for prototyping small quantities, this process is best suited for higher volume production.

POM (Delrin/Acetal)
High stiffness, high accuracy, low friction, easy to machine.
Nylon
Excellent mechanical properties, thermal, chemical and abrasion resistant.


ABS
Common thermoplastic, impact resistant, easy to machine.
PEEK
High-performance thermoplastic, very high strength, thermal and chemical resistant.
PTFE (Teflon)
Low friction, chemical and thermal resistant.


Polycarbonate
High toughness, excellent impact strength, transparent.
Polyethylene
Excellent strength-to-weight ratio, impact and weather resistant.
PVC
Excellent chemical and weather resistance and good toughness.


PMMA (Acrylic)
Transparent rigid plastic often used as a substitute for glass.
PET
Tough plastic that offers excellent wear resistance and mechanical strength.
Polypropylene

CNC Surface Finishing Options



Alodine
Chromate conversion coating, more commonly known by its brand name Alodine, is a chemical coating that passivate and protects aluminum from corrosion. It is also used as a base layer before priming and painting parts.
Anodizing
Anodizing is an electrolytic passivation process that grows the natural oxide layer on aluminum parts for protection from wear and
corrosion, as well as for cosmetic effects.
Electropolishing
Electropolishing is an electrochemical process used to improve the surface finish of a part by removing material to level microscopic peaks and valleys.



Powder Coating
Powder coating is a process in which a dry powder paint is applied to a metal surface. Unlike traditional, liquid paint, powder coating does not need a solvent to keep the binder and filler of the paint in liquid suspension.
Passivation
Passivation is a chemical reaction that causes a material to be less affected by corrosion or other environmental factors.
Painting
Painting is normal used to plastic items to make the surface looking good.
