The mechanical strength of PMMA is high: the relative molecular mass of PMMA is about 2 million, it is a polymer with long chains, and the chains forming the molecules are very soft, therefore, the strength of PMMA is relatively high, and the resistance to stretching and impact is 7 to 18 times higher than that of ordinary glass. There is a heated and stretched treated Plexiglas in which the molecular chain segments are arranged in a very orderly manner, giving the material a significant increase in toughness. With a nail into this plexiglass, even if the nail penetrates, it does not produce cracks. This plexiglass also does not break into pieces when pierced by a bullet. As a result, stretched PMMA can be used as bullet-proof glass and also as a cockpit cover on military aircraft.
PMMA has a lower density than glass: the density of PMMA is approximately 1.15-1.19g/cm3, half that of glass (2.40-2.80g/cm3) and 43% that of metallic aluminium (which is a light metal).
PMMA has a low melting point, much lower than that of glass at around 1000 degrees.
Manufacturing Technique
Due to its larger branched chain, the viscosity of polymethyl methacrylate is high, so the processing speed is slower when using thermal processing methods. Plexiglass can not only be cut with lathes and drilled with drill presses, but can also be bonded with acetone and chloroform into various shapes of apparatus, and can also be processed into various kinds of products such as large aircraft cockpit covers and small dentures and brackets with blow moulding, injection and extrusion methods of plastic moulding.
