The Purpose and Significance of Measuring Dissolved Oxygen in Water

Dissolved oxygen (DO) refers to the amount of oxygen dissolved in water, expressed in milligrams of oxygen per liter of water. Oxygen dissolved in water is called dissolved oxygen. Dissolved oxygen exists in a molecular state in water. Dissolved oxygen in water is one of the important indicators of water quality and one of the important factors for water purification. High dissolved oxygen is beneficial for the degradation of various pollutants in the water, thus enabling the water to be purified quickly; On the contrary, the degradation of pollutants in water with low dissolved oxygen is slower.

The dissolved oxygen content in water is affected by two factors: one is the oxygen consumption that causes a decrease in DO, including aerobic organic matter degradation and aerobic biological respiration; Another type of reoxygenation that increases DO mainly involves the dissolution of oxygen in the air, as well as the photosynthesis of aquatic plants using ultrasonic flaw detectors. The mutual growth and decline of these two interactions result in a spatiotemporal variation in the dissolved oxygen content in water.

Dissolved oxygen in water mainly comes from two aspects: on the one hand, when dissolved oxygen (DO) in the water is less than its solubility, oxygen in the atmosphere dissolves into the water. Gas exchange is often carried out at the interface between water and atmosphere. Water releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and oxygen dissolves into the water. This is very similar to the respiration of organisms, which is the main source of oxygen in water. On the other hand, aquatic plants release oxygen into the water through photosynthesis. However, due to the frequent occurrence of oxidation in water, which consumes a large amount of oxygen, especially in the degradation of organic matter, there is a continuous process of deoxidation (reduction of dissolved oxygen) and reoxygenation (increase of dissolved oxygen) in the water.

Under natural conditions, when water flows, the process of reaeration is relatively rapid and easy to replenish. The consumption of oxygen in the water can maintain a certain level of dissolved oxygen in the water. Conversely, under static water conditions, the reaeration process is slow and the oxygen content in the water cannot be replenished in a timely manner, resulting in a state of anaerobic state. When industrial wastewater and domestic sewage carry a large amount of organic matter into the water body, the deoxygenation of the water body is severe. Even in flowing river water, the deoxygenation process cannot compensate for such a large degree of deoxygenation, and dissolved oxygen rapidly decreases, causing fish and aerobic organisms to die and water quality to deteriorate. The pollution of water by organic matter and reducing substances can reduce the partial pressure of dissolved oxygen and oxygen in the air. The amount of DO in natural water bodies is not only related to the number of organisms and organic matter in the water, but also to water temperature and water layer. Under normal circumstances, the dissolved oxygen in surface water is 5-10mg/L. In the presence of wind and waves, the dissolved oxygen in seawater can reach up to 14 mg/L. In water bodies where algae thrive, the increase in oxygen release due to photosynthesis may also cause the oxygen in the water to reach supersaturation. Groundwater generally has less dissolved oxygen, and deep water may even have no oxygen.

The content of dissolved oxygen in water is related to factors such as atmospheric pressure, water temperature, and salt content. Dissolved oxygen in unpolluted water is saturated. The dissolved oxygen in clean surface water is close to saturation. When a large number of algae reproduce, dissolved oxygen may become supersaturated. Moderate oxygen is a fundamental condition for the survival and reproduction of fish and aerobic bacteria. The content of dissolved oxygen in a saturated state of fresh water at 0 ℃ and atmospheric pressure is 10mg/L. Fish find it difficult to survive when dissolved oxygen is below 4mg/L. If the organic matter content in water is high and its oxygen consumption rate exceeds the oxygen supply rate, the DO amount in the water will continue to decrease. When the water is polluted by organic matter, the dissolved oxygen in the water can even be close to zero. At this time, organic matter will decompose under anaerobic conditions, leading to fermentation and serious deterioration of water quality. After water is polluted by organic matter, aerobic bacteria oxidize and consume dissolved oxygen. If there is no timely replenishment of oxygen in the air, the dissolved oxygen in water will decrease, ultimately leading to water deterioration. So dissolved oxygen is used as an indicator of the degree of water pollution. The less dissolved oxygen, the more severe the pollution.
