What is PUL fabric

PUL stands for polyurethane laminate, this basically means that fabric has been laminated with polyurethane. Usually the fabric laminated is a knit polyester fabric, although sometimes you will find cottons or even minky fabric that has this laminated layer. For cloth nappy making use, most people prefer to use a polyester fabric that has been laminated, as it is less likely to wick, or transfer the moisture to the outside of the nappy as sometimes happens with a cotton PUL fabric.

Uses for PUL

The polyurethane laminate layer on PUL fabric makes it perfect for using on items that need an element of waterproofing. If you are looking to make cloth nappies, washable menstrual pads, wet bags, breast pads or even bibs, you might want to consider using PUL fabric. It is possible to get PUL fabric in a variety of different prints, however, for many applications, a hidden layer of PUL means that you can be even more creative with the finished product. By using a plain PUL fabric hidden in the cloth nappy, or other item, you are then about to use any outer fabric that takes your fancy. If it is for a cloth nappy, then a fabric that does not soak up water is preferable from a performance point of view, which is one of the reasons that minky as an outer layer for a cloth nappy is ideal.
