Hydrogen Recovery from Refinery Gas
As environmental regulations on fuel impurities become increasingly stringent, hydrotreating is a primary method used to remove sulfur, oxygen, nitrogen, metals, and other contaminants from fuel. During the refining process, to maintain sufficient hydrogen partial pressure in the reactor, low-carbon hydrocarbons are continuously vented. The vent gas contains hydrogen concentrations as high as 50-80%. Venting this gas results in a significant loss of hydrogen.
Using membrane separation equipment to recover hydrogen from the vent gas can allow it to be reused for hydrotreating, reducing hydrogen consumption per ton of oil by 20-30%, thereby enhancing the hydrotreating capacity.
