Polypropylene Industry
In the polypropylene production process, a significant amount of propylene monomer is present in the vent gas from monomer purification, polymerization, and resin degassing. In the batch bulk polypropylene process, compression condensation is typically used to recover propylene monomer from the vent gas, reducing specific consumption. However, due to limitations of pressure and condensation temperature, the non-condensable gas still contains a high concentration of propylene monomer, up to 50-80 vol%. In batch bulk polypropylene production, the compression/condensation method can reduce propylene consumption from 1.12-1.15 to 1.07-1.09. However, for every ton of polypropylene produced, the loss of propylene monomer remains as high as 70-90 kg.
In the 200,000-ton BP-Amoco gas-phase propylene polymerization process, over 2,700 tons of propylene are lost annually during polymerization and resin degassing.
