What is NAD+?
NAD is a biological term (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide), abbreviated as coenzyme I. It is a kind of electron transfer and a coenzyme of many dehydrogenases in the body. It connects the tricarboxylic acid cycle and the respiratory chain. Its function is to transfer the hydrogen taken off during metabolism to flavoprotein. NADH or more accurately NADH+, H+ is its reduced form.
Research shows that the Slc12a8 protein transports nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) directly into cells with the help of sodium ions and quickly functions for NAD production. When NAD levels decrease, cells also enhance the expression of the Slc12a8 gene,increasing their ability to transport NMN. Experimental results show that taking nicotinamide ribose can increase the content of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) in the human body by 60%. NAD+ is an indispensable substance for activating acetylase and will decrease with age.
