Silicon carbide is an inorganic substance with a chemical formula of SiC. It is made by high temperature smelting of raw materials such as quartz sand, petroleum coke (or coal coke), and wood chips (salt is needed to produce green silicon carbide). Silicon carbide also exists in nature, a rare mineral, moissanite. Among the non-oxide high-tech refractory materials such as C, N, B,silicon carbide is the most widely used and economical one, and it can be called gold steel grit or refractory sand.

Silicon carbide crystals is divided into black silicon carbide and green silicon carbide by color.
1. Black refractory SiC silicon carbide contains about 98% SiC, and its toughness is higher than that of green silicon carbide. It is mostly used for processing materials with low tensile strength, such as glass, ceramics, stone, refractory, cast iron and non-ferrous metals.
2. Green SiC silicon carbide powder contains more than 99% SiC and has good self sharpening property. Silicon carbide crystals is mostly used for machining cemented carbide, titanium alloy and optical glass, honing cylinder liner and finishing high speed steel cutting tools. In addition, there is cubic silicon carbide, which is a yellow green crystal made by special technology. The abrasive tool is suitable for ultra precision machining of bearings.

Chemical industry
Silicon carbide can decompose in molten steel and react with free oxygen and metal oxides to form carbon monoxide and silicon slag. Therefore, it can be used as a purify-ing agent for steelmaking, that is, as a deoxidizer for steelmaking and asa structure improver for cast iron.
Electrician
Used as heating element, nonlinear resistance element and high temperature semiconductor material. Heating elements such as silicon carbide rod (suitable for all kinds of elec tric furnaces working at 1100- 1500℃), non-linear resistance elements all kinds of lightning protection valve.
Abrasive tools
Silicon carbide mainly used for grinding wheel, sandpaper, abrasive belt, Whetstone, grinding block, grinding head grinding paste monocrystalline silicon polycrystalline silicon in photovoltaic products and piezoelectric crystal in electronic industry.
Refractories
Silicon carbide has high melting point,chemical inertia and thermal vibration resis tance, so siliconcarbide can be used in many kinds of silicon carbide ce ramic products, such as abrasives shed plates and saggers used in ce ramic firing kilns, silicon carbide bricks used in zinc smelting vertica cylinder distillation furnace etc.
