Spiral wound gaskets
Description
Spiral wound gaskets comprise a mix of metallic and filler material. Generally, the gasket has a metal (normally carbon rich or stainless steel) wound outwards in a circular spiral (other shapes are possible) with the filler material (generally a flexible graphite) wound in the same manner but starting from the opposing side. This results in alternating layers of filler and metal. The filler material in these gaskets acts as the sealing element, with the metal providing structural support.
These gaskets have proven to be reliable in most applications, and allow lower clamping forces than solid gaskets, albeit with a higher cost.
Properties
• good elastic recovery properties (control of starting up and cooling down processes)
• excellent temperature resistance, permanent temperature range: - 200 °C to approx. + 550 °C
• very high pressure limit (320 bar)
• good media resistance
• high operational safety
•very low leakage rates for gases and liquids, complies with leakage requirements of TA-Luft 2002 (VDI 2440/2200)
• no health hazard; can be disposed of at household waste landfill
• no ageing or brittleness not even at high temperatures
• very good handling during transport, assembly and dismantling, mechanically stable
• labelling of every gasket on the outer ring
• use of low chloride filler materials makes the gaskets suitable for use even between equipment parts made from austenitic materials.
• spiral wound gaskets are used successfully for chemical plants, power stations, water treatment, in pipe and appliance constructions, refineries in short in all areas dominated by critical operating conditions.
Profiles
Basic Type gaskets for tongue and grove or male and female or grooved to flat face flanges.
Inner & Outer Circle Type gaskets with an inner and centering rings for additional compression stop. Provides heat and corrosion barrier. Prevents flange erosion in steam applications. Prevents also ‘buckling’ (possibility for the spiral to spring into the pipe). Always advised with PTFE as filler.
Outer Circle Type gaskets with an external metal ring which centres the gasket between the bolts and acts as compression stop. Prevents the gasket against blow-out.
Inner Circle Type gaskets with an internal metal ring which acts as a compression stop and fills the space between flange bore and inside diameter of gasket. Suitable for male and female pipe flanges.
Material
The material is coded and identified by colour on the outer ring. The selection of sealing materials depends on their chemical resistance and the operating temperature. We are happy to assist you. And other materials available on request.
