Granite usually occurs in large deposits, many times referred to as slabs, throughout the world. Mining operations use different methods of cutting to extract the different deposits from the ground in places called quarries. These slabs are then polished, put on trucks and sent to the factory. There, the slabs will be cut into the appropriate sizes and lengths for commercial and home use.
Since granite needs to be extracted in large pieces, typical methods of large-scale blasting and collection will not work. Instead, teams of workers with a series of large, specialized equipment and products such as high-capacity extractors, cranes, tamb rock machines will do get work job done. The teams will then slowly dig around the slabs of granite to break them free. Once the slabs have been broken free they are pulled to large trucks capable of carrying heavy loads or are processed on-site depending on the mine. These granite slabs can weigh as much as 40 tons.
After removal from the quarry, the granite blocks are transported to the processing facility, where they are cut into slabs of varying widths by modern diamond wire saws – saws with industrial-grade diamond tips. A bridge saw is then employed to cut the stone slabs into the proper shape for its application, whether it be a counter-top or a sink. These saws typically use circular metal blades studded with diamonds, and water is sprayed onto the blade to cool it during the cutting process.
We at Ascon Granite can offer you a 3 type of surface finishing ......
The most common finish for granite countertops is polished. The polished finish makes the surface of the granite countertop glossy and almost mirror-like. With a polished finish, the characteristics of the stone are highlighted. The colors and textures will be more vibrant.
The polished finish it the easiest surface to clean; it is easy to keep countertops with a polished finish looking brand new as well. Additionally, the polished finish seals the pores of the stone to keep water and moisture out of the stone.
Care for polished granite includes both resealing and polishing the stone in addition to keeping it clean.
The leathered finish also called the brushed finish, is a relatively new finishing style. It is created by taking a honed surface and running diamond-tipped brushes over it to add texture with subtle dimples.
Leathered finishes tend to look more sophisticated. Leathered countertops often keep the color of the natural stone.
Leathered granite will be more stain-resistant. This surface finish hides water spots, fingerprints, and smudges.
Granite is the only natural stone that can have a flamed finish due to the high heat applied to the surface of the stone.
This makes the flamed finish pretty rare; in fact, it is most popular for outdoor kitchens, but it isn't often used on indoor countertops.
To create a flamed finish, granite is heated under extreme temperatures that cause the grains in the stone to burst and change color.
The final product has a rougher surface with a natural and faded appearance. Countertops with flamed finishes are usually muted in color.
