Hold down grid also called as hold down plate is used to limit the packing bed from moving and getting packing pieces entrained away from the bed. The primary function of bed limiters is to prevent expansion of the packed beds, as well as to maintain the bed top surface. It is installed on a support rings as well jacked to the column wall with stud bolts. The hold down grid be made in single piece or multi piece construction and can therefore be installed through a manhole or body flange.

The hold down grid is made of rods or bars and in combination with wire mesh screens or expanded metal screens attached to an annular frame.

Hold down grid is normally recommended for metal and plastic random packing.
